Notiz | JEAN ROUPERT BERGER-lived in or near Sedan, France, which is on the Meuse River, in the Ardennes, near the present Belgian border. At the time, the area was ruled by the Duke ef Bouillon, who also held the title of Prince of Sedan. The area passed to France in 1642. Sedan was a Protestant stronghold in the 16th and 17th centuries. After the end of the Thirty Years War, in 1648, Cardinal Richelieu destroyed the power of the Huguenots, and there was a considerable amount of persecution of Protestants. Presumably that is what prompted the Berger family to move to the Odenwald, in Hesse-Darmstadt. Germany was devastated during the Thirty Years War, and the people were impoverished. It would have been an opportune time to buy a family farm in Hesse. Jean Roupert died before the family was able to move-but his widow obtained permission to settle with her son Philipp in the "Grafschaft Erbach." A grafschaft is essentially a county, and Erbach is in the Odenwald. |
